The 58th Annual International Conference on Salish and Neighbouring Languages

Dates: July 27–29, 2023

Location: Snuneymuxw Learning Centre at 1984 Woobank Rd., Nanaimo, BC
(This conference will be in-person only.)

The Hul’q’umi’num’ Language & Culture Society, the Snuneymuxw First Nation, and the students and instructors of Hul’q’umi’num’ language program at Simon Fraser University welcome you to ICSNL 58.

Dates of conference will be July 27–29, 2023. Events will start on Thursday, July 27 at 1pm, with a day devoted to presentations and papers on language and the arts, including stories, theatre, music, visual arts, and digital arts. We invite you to contact us if you have work you would like to share.

Friday and Saturday will feature presentations on documentation, analysis, preservation, and teaching of Salish and neighbouring languages. If you have any research to present and would like to be added to the program, please inform us by Friday, July 14.

There is no registration fee for First Nations or students, but we ask you to register so we know how many people to cook for. Please register by Monday, July 24. And if you have already registered but find you are unable to attend, please let us know at hlcsprojectsmanager@gmail.com.

Proceedings: Papers will appear in a volume of preceedings, published by UBC Working Papers in Linguistics. The volume will be available online for viewing and download here: https://lingpapers.sites.olt.ubc.ca/ .

Travel
Location: Snuneymuxw Learning Centre at 1984 Woobank Rd., Nanaimo, BC
Ferry: If you are coming to Vancouver Island by ferry with a car, a reservation is recommended. In the summer, stand-by lines can be quite long. The closest ferry terminals to the conference are Duke Point (from Tsawwassen) and Departure Bay (from Horseshoe Bay) https://www.bcferries.com/RouteSelectionPage .
Rides: Please inform us if you will need to be picked up from a Nanaimo ferry terminal or the Nanaimo airport.

Accommodation:
Please let us know on your registration form if you would like to be notified about opportunities for sharing accommodations and/or transportation with other attendees.
We are holding some rooms at local hotels at group prices for Thursday and Friday evening, and we ask you to contact us at hlcsprojectsmanager@gmail.com by Friday, July 14th if you would like assistance with accommodation.

Suggested accommodation:
We have found good rates at Bethlehem Centre and they have a limited number of rooms available during the conference.
