Public Speaking
Public speaking is an important aspect of all Coast Salish sacred ceremonies. These ceremonies are conducted in our Hul’q’umi’num’ language with speakers welcoming guests, calling witnesses, and observing protocols in the language. In addition to sacred ceremonies, our speakers are often called on to deliver speeches in Hul’q’umi’num’ to the broader community. They often deliver welcome speeches, opening & closing prayers, and other kinds of public speaking.
Sacred Language and Ceremonial Speakers language group
We also regularly offer a Sacred Language and Ceremonial Speakers language group where participants have the opportunity to improve their language fluidity and performance skills for public and ceremonial speaking. As part of this group, participants learn about the tradition of Coast Salish ceremonial speaking, practice skills necessary to public speaking, and learn snuw’uyulh for ceremonial speaking – important cultural knowledge around protocols for performing speeches at community ceremonial events.

- as well as written speeches and videos of Elders performing speeches.
We hope these materials will be a useful resource to experienced Longhouse Speakers and new speakers.
