About Hul’q’umi’num’ Language Academy (HLA) – ta’ulthun sqwal

In partnership with Simon Fraser University, our Hul’q’umi’num Language Academy offers a variety of language learning opportunities. Students in our program can earn a Certificate or Diploma in Indigenous Language Proficiency or complete a BA degree with double minors in Linguistics and Indigenous Languages. Our courses are offered in a blended model, both on-line and in-person.

Our Activities

We have a dedicated team of Elders, educators, and linguists working with us to help revitalize the Hul’q’umi’num’ language. Our goal is to support learners of all ages and abilities. Whether you are just starting your language journey or are already quite fluent, we have resources and classes to help you learn.

In addition to our language courses, we also carry out research. We have completed research projects on a variety of topics including the language of canoe culture, Coast Salish weddings, cultural knowledge of birds, the Salish Sea, and Hul’q’umi’num’ placenames. Find out more about this research under our “projects” tab on the menu bar, and check out our other websites:

Come and join us on the journey to revitalizing the Hul’q’umi’num’ language. We encourage you to attend our classes and explore our websites. Our websites offer Hul’q’umi’num’ audio and video recordings, and a collection of transcriptions, translations, lessons, and more.
